Housing Diversification - A Guide to Custom and Self-Build Housing Masterclass - For Elected Members working within Local Authorities

20 January 2025

19th February 2025 12.30pm-2pm

With the housing crisis deepening, housing diversification is an important consideration for all Councils and their elected members. Providing greater variety and choice, range of different types, tenures and models of housing is vital to ensure councils fully respond to the housing needs of local communities.

This new Masterclass has been specifically designed to provide insight and a greater level of understanding about custom and self-build housing for new elected and existing members.

This session will be facilitated by Right to Build Task Force experts and will include Jeremy Christophers, former leader of Teignbridge District Council and a self-builder, who can share his perspective and experiences from a councillor's point of view.

The session will provide a brief introduction to Custom and Self-Build (CSB), giving an overview of the legislative statutory duties, sharing good practice examples of self-build policies and self/custom build housing approaches including:

  • Types of Development
  • Design Codes & Plot Passports
  • Percent Policies & development on larger sites
  • Opportunities small sites provide

We will also address delivery issues with reference to supply and demand, decision making, and appeals. We will explain the benefits of custom and self-build housing in relation to housing diversification and unpack the environmental, economic and social benefits that it brings to a local area.

Lastly, we will explore how Councils can promote, facilitate and enable custom and self-build (including affordable) housing initiatives.

FREE for Elected Members working within Local Authorities, thanks to funding from MHCLG.
